When Numbers Don’t Add Up
August 18, 2026The A/C That Almost Made It.
Anyone who spent this summer in the Lowcountry knows the shape of it: heat index over 105 for weeks, humidity that barely broke overnight, doors opening and closing all day and letting a little more of it back in each time.
In a summer like that, a house that isn’t cooling right stops being a small annoyance. It gets into everything: how people sleep, how the day feels before it’s even started.
The Signs Were Real. They Just Weren’t Loud.
A homeowner on Hilton Head, someone we’d worked with before, noticed the house wasn’t keeping up with the heat the way it used to. Wherever the thermostat was set, the rooms never quite agreed with it, and the utility bills were running noticeably higher than usual for that house.
Nothing had broken. No noise, no visible leak, no obvious reason to call. It just felt off, and it had felt that way for a while. They called because they’d called us before. Not an emergency, they said. Just something worth a look.
What the Technician Found.
Our NATE-certified technician found two things. The first was a slow refrigerant leak, the kind that doesn’t cause a system to quit, just to move less heat with every cycle. That means it runs longer and works harder to hit the same setting on the thermostat, which is exactly where a hot, humid summer’s worth of extra runtime ends up: the utility bill. Next steps added refrigerant to the level suggested and they were back in business with cooling efficiently.
The second was a capacitor close to failing, the small part that gives the compressor the jolt of energy it needs to start. If it had fully failed, there’s a good chance the compressor would have gone with it, and that’s a very different repair, in cost and in how long the homeowner would’ve been without cooling in the middle of August.
That’s the pattern with a system in trouble: it doesn’t hand you something to point at. It compensates. A house that runs constantly and still feels warm looks exactly like a house simply losing to the heat, so the weather gets the blame, and the call waits.
“We thought something wasn’t right, but we kept putting it off. I’m so glad I finally called. They were out fast, walked us through exactly what was going on, and found things we’d never have caught on our own. I don’t like to think about where we’d be if we’d left it.” -Jim R, Homeowner
Better than just a fix, our homeowner shared their appreciation of knowing how busy the heat must have kept our team this summer, and how much it meant to get fit into the schedule the same day. That’s the kind of thing that sticks with our team.
The Repair Was the Small Part
The actual fix, a new capacitor and a repaired, recharged system, took less time than the conversation about what almost happened. That’s usually how it goes: once something’s correctly diagnosed, the repair itself is the easy part.
After the hardest summer the Lowcountry has seen in years, that’s what peace of mind actually looks like with Superior Services’ service. Our focus is looking after your house before anything goes completely wrong, and be the one company to call for whatever it needs next, even when you don’t know what that is.
If your system’s kept up fine lately but something still feels a little off, a slightly higher bill, a room that never quite gets there, that’s usually worth a look before it turns into a bigger repair.
